George Washington Inaugural Button
The “Linked States with GW cipher” button is one of the most iconic varieties of George Washington inaugural buttons, dating to 1789, the year of Washington’s first inauguration as President of the United States.
Worn on coats or waistcoats as visible expressions of patriotism, this rare button features an endless chain of thirteen linked circles bearing the initials of the states. The design is derived from a motif first used on Continental Currency fractional notes issued in February 1776. During the Revolutionary era, this popular symbol of unity appeared repeatedly on currency, medals, and other patriotic imagery, and was also incorporated into some regimental flags.
