Ms. Eckford writing her memories of her first day of attendance at Central High School in Little Rock.

Elizabeth Ann Eckford made history as a member of the Little Rock Nine, the nine African American students who desegregated Little Rock Central High School on September 4, 1957.

Eckford arrived at Central High School alone. The Little Rock Nine were supposed to go together, but their meeting place was changed the previous night. What the group of nine went through was unfathomable and what Eckford herself went through that day was even more harrowing.

Eckford pens her thoughts about that day, as captured by the images on the left, and that photo essay is in the Collection.
